LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Farm Bureau and the state’s congressional delegation are urging Congress to act before key provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) expire at the end of 2025, warning that inaction could result in steep tax increases for farm families, small businesses, and rural communities.

“The uncertainty surrounding the future of these tax provisions is causing real concern,” said Nebraska Farm Bureau President Mark McHargue. “These reforms helped level the playing field for agriculture. Losing them would hit producers hard at the worst possible time.”

The TCJA, signed into law under the Trump administration, significantly revised the federal tax code, including benefits that were particularly valuable to farmers and small businesses. These included lower tax rates, expanded estate tax exemptions, and increased deductions for income and equipment purchases.

Estate Tax Changes Could Impact Family Farms

One of the most pressing concerns is the potential rollback of the estate tax exemption. Under the TCJA, the exemption doubled to more than $13.9 million per individual, or $27.9 million for couples—allowing many family farms to transfer property without triggering estate taxes. If the provision expires, the exemption could drop back to 2017 levels, near $5.5 million.

“Land values in Nebraska are high, and many family farms and ranches could be subject to the estate tax again if the exemption drops,” McHargue said. “Farm and ranch families work to build something to pass down. This could threaten that.”

Business Deductions, Depreciation Provisions at Risk

Also set to expire is the 20% qualified business income (QBI) deduction, which benefits sole proprietorships, partnerships, and S-corporations—common structures in agriculture. The loss of this deduction could significantly raise federal tax burdens for producers already coping with high input costs and interest rates.

Another expiring benefit is 100% bonus depreciation, which allows immediate write-offs on new and used equipment purchases. This provision has encouraged farmers to invest in modern machinery and infrastructure. Without action, bonus depreciation will fully phase out by 2027.

“Bonus depreciation helped us modernize our equipment without killing our cash flow. Losing that would make upgrades a lot harder,” McHargue said.

Nebraska’s congressional delegation is voicing strong support for renewing the TCJA provisions, citing economic pressure on working families and rural businesses.

Sen. Deb Fischer said, “Nebraska’s farmers, ranchers, and small businesses benefitted greatly from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Congress must come together to make these tax cuts permanent.”

Sen. Pete Ricketts warned that expiration would amount to a $4 trillion tax hike nationwide, including an estimated $1,700 per year increase for a family of four earning $80,000.

Rep. Mike Flood called the TCJA “critical to ensuring that we get America back on track,” while Rep. Don Bacon said families could face a “devastating 20% tax increase.”

Rep. Adrian Smith, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, emphasized the importance of the TCJA for succession planning and reinvestment by rural businesses.

McHargue said the Nebraska Farm Bureau isn’t asking for special treatment, but for a tax policy that reflects the long-term, capital-intensive nature of farming and ranching.

“This is about preserving family farms and ranches, keeping rural communities alive, and ensuring that Nebraska agriculture remains strong for generations to come,” he said.

Great Plains Health implements new text messaging service 

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A Beatrice man has been arrested in connection with a string of church burglaries reported in North Platte over the past month, authorities said.

Chad Peterson was taken into custody on April 18th following an investigation that tied him to three separate incidents. According to North Platte police, the first burglary was reported on March 26 at a church in the 300 block of W. 5th Street. A second incident, an attempted burglary, occurred on April 9 at a church in the 3300 block of S. Oak Street.

Investigators reviewed video footage from the second location and used license plate data from the Flock automated license plate recognition (ALPR) system to identify a suspect and vehicle.

On April 18, police responded to a third reported burglary at a church in the 3300 block of Echo Drive. ALPR data showed the suspect’s vehicle was in the area at the time of the incident.

Officers located the vehicle in the 2100 block of S. Jeffers Street and obtained a search warrant for two vehicles operated by Peterson. A search was conducted, and Peterson was detained.

Peterson was arrested on charges of possession of burglary tools, a Class IV felony; attempted burglary, a Class IIIA felony; and burglary, a Class IIA felony. He was booked into the Lincoln County Detention Center.

The investigation remains ongoing. OGALLALA, Neb. — The Lake Mac Casino Resort project, located just south of Interstate 80 in Ogallala, is moving forward with plans to open a temporary gaming facility later this year, according to officials from Elite Casino Resorts.

Sharon Haselhoff, a representative of Elite Casino Resorts, which will operate the casino, spoke in March to local business leaders during the Keith County Area Development's progressive business group meeting about the economic and employment impact of the project. She said the company is working to integrate with the community and advised local businesses on adapting to the presence of a large new employer in the area.

The temporary casino will feature a six-table poker room, slot machines, but will not be allowed to host keno. In addition, horse racing is expected to begin around Labor Day, pending completion of the track. Haselhoff said the long-term plan includes hosting 15 race weeks each year, spread across five weeks. A typical race week would consist of three days of racing with 10 races per day.

The permanent casino complex will eventually include a hotel, projected to open in 2027 or 2028.

Hiring for the casino is expected to begin soon after a general manager is appointed, Haselhoff said.

Elite Casino Resorts, based in Iowa, operates several gaming facilities across the Midwest including the new Grand Island Casino Resort at Fonner Park in Grand Island, and is expanding into western Nebraska with the Lake Mac project.

Lake Mac Casino Resort in Ogallala hoping to race by Labor Day

LINCOLN, NEB. —Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol removed 18 impaired drivers from the road during a special enforcement operation last weekend.

The effort, which ran from Friday, April 18 through Sunday, April 20, included high-visibility patrols throughout the state. During the operation, troopers arrested 18 people for driving under the influence.

“Keeping Nebraska’s roadways safe is a major part of our job,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “By removing impaired drivers from the road, we’re able to minimize likelihood of serious or fatal crashes occurring in and around our communities.”

In addition to the arrests for impaired driving, troopers issued citations for speeding (276), driving under suspension (18), minor in possession of alcohol (9), open alcohol container (15), no seat belt (7), improper child restraint (4) and no proof of insurance (13).

This effort was made possible thanks in part to a grant for $10,660 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – North Platte Stockyards recorded one of the most historic sales in U.S. cattle market history on Tuesday, April 15, with a standout performance in its feeder calf offering, including the third-highest 5-weight sale ever recorded nationally.

A powerful run of 145 head averaging 524 pounds brought in $439.50 per hundredweight, marking the highest 5-weight price in the country for the day. The sale came within 50 cents of the national all-time record and stands as the highest 5-weight price ever recorded in Nebraska. It also marked the top national price ever for a lot of 100 head or more.

“This was a truly historic day for our barn and for the cattle market,” North Platte Stockyards said in a statement. “We’re proud to be setting the pace nationally.”

Other notable sales included 24 head at 432 pounds selling for $441.00 per hundredweight—the highest 4-weight sale in North Platte history—and 26 head at 802 pounds fetching $280.00, the fourth-highest 8-weight price ever at the barn.

North Platte Stockyards will host its next feeder calf special on May 6. Consignments are currently being accepted through the office or local representatives.

Z 93.5 Country's BIG D & BUBBA win ACM for Personality's of The Year

McCOOK, Neb. — The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met Wednesday evening for its regularly scheduled meeting at the McCook Community College East Campus, where members approved several academic and operational items, celebrated student achievements, and honored retiring staff.

Board Chair Cynthia Duncan called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. CDT. Present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and board members Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Molly Jeffres, Ted Klug Jr., Kim Korgan, Megan McGown, Kent Miller, Tyler Pribbeno, and Tricia Schaffer. Board member Dr. Ben Lashley was absent and excused. NPCC student trustee EmiLee Walnofer and MCC student trustee Kendree Kern were also in attendance.

During the open forum, student trustees shared campus updates from North Platte and McCook. Board member Matthew Broz commended MPCC Director of Financial Aid Erinn Brown for her work with the scholarship process. MPCC Director of Library Resources Katie Wheeler introduced the Phi Theta Kappa All-Nebraska Academic Team, and MPCC Business Instructor Renelle Mooney presented members of the FBLA Collegiate chapter. Retiring Ogallala Campus Administrator Mary Pierce and Imperial Campus Administrator Brenda Ledall were recognized for their years of service to MPCC.

On a consent motion, the board approved the March 19 board work session and meeting minutes, as well as the March financial report.

In action items, the board approved the formation of a new student powerlifting club, the “Mid-Plains Bar Benders.” Additionally, the board approved program reviews for Graphic Design and Early Childhood Education, which will now move forward to the Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education.

Other approvals included a two-year renewal of the DocuSign contract for $54,250.56, an upgrade to the college's nursing software system, and a $90,237 contract with Platte Valley Electric for electrical distribution equipment at W.W. Wood. The board also approved March disbursements totaling $1,107,054.28.

The board heard cabinet reports from President Purdy and various administrators, including updates on academics, student affairs, finance, human resources, and marketing.

The meeting moved into closed session at 7:36 p.m. to discuss personnel and real estate matters and returned to open session at 8:45 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 8:46 p.m.

The next MPCC Board of Governors meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on May 14 in Broken Bow.

Authorities say an unknown individual entered multiple unlocked vehicles between the 2000 and 1700 blocks of East D Street around 3 a.m., stealing several items, including a .45 caliber handgun.

Police are urging residents in the area to review any surveillance footage that may assist in identifying the suspect.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — MENTOR Nebraska has named Steven Heinzle as the 2025 Mentor of the Year, honoring his 25 years of dedicated service to youth mentorship through Community Connections in North Platte.

Heinzle began his mentoring journey after learning about Community Connections through the North Platte Jaycees. Over the last two and a half decades, he has mentored nine youth through the program, with many of those relationships extending well beyond the typical one-year commitment.

His mentees credit Heinzle’s consistency and compassion as life-changing. Through heartfelt conversations, engaging activities, and a reliable presence, Heinzle has become a steady source of support for the young people he mentors.

“Steve’s dedication is unmatched,” said Jayna Schaaf, Executive Director of Community Connections. “His 25 years of service show the power of showing up, again and again, for young people. He truly exemplifies what it means to be a Mentor of the Year.”

Heinzle is the second mentor from Community Connections to receive this statewide honor. Jason Merz was recognized with the same award in 2022, and the program has also been spotlighted with Mentoring Coordinator Angela Hipp receiving the Mentoring Practitioner of the Year award from MENTOR Nebraska.

These accolades underscore the ongoing impact of the Community Connections program and its commitment to fostering strong, meaningful mentorships in North Platte.

The 2025 Excellence in Mentoring Awards will be streamed live on Wednesday, April 23, from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. Viewers are encouraged to tune in to celebrate Heinzle and other exceptional mentors from across the state.

Steven Heinzle Named Nebraska’s 2025 Mentor of the Year

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — North Platte High School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter returned to competition for the first time in several years and made a strong impression at the Nebraska State Leadership Conference.

Several students earned medals and top finishes at the event, held earlier this month, with three qualifying to represent Nebraska at the National FCCLA Conference in Orlando, Florida this July.

Rebecca Keneip earned a silver medal in the Repurpose and Redesign category, while Quintin Lawson earned a silver medal in Focus on Children and placed third in the Culinary Knife Cuts skill competition.

Chloe Odle received a gold medal in Event Management, and Emma Mashek earned a gold medal and qualified for nationals in Early Childhood Education. Mashek also placed first in the Lesson Planning skills competition.

Emily Odle was named state runner-up and qualified for nationals in Fashion Design. Bella Harwager also qualified for nationals as a state runner-up in Hospitality and Tourism.

“This was North Platte’s first time competing in several years, and we’re incredibly proud of all our students for their hard work and success,” said the chapter’s advisor.

The students who qualified for nationals will travel to Orlando in July to compete and showcase their skills on the national stage.

North Platte High FCCLA Students Earn Medals, National Bids at State Conference

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte City Council approved several infrastructure improvements during its regular meeting Tuesday night, including the use of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to pave an expanded portion of West 15th Street.

Mayor Brandon Kelliher said the city was able to stretch its grant dollars further than anticipated after initial bids came in under budget.

“When the original bid came in, it was about $90,000 lower than the actual grant amount,” Kelliher said. “So, we went back to the state and asked if we could pave one more block with the extra funds, and they approved it.”

The council approved a $402,228 contract with Level, LLC of North Platte to pave West 15th Street from North Hayes Avenue to North Custer Avenue. Kelliher said the additional paving will eliminate remaining gravel patches and help modernize the north side of the city, although future improvements will depend on further grant funding.

“In areas where you’re putting in water, sewer and pavement, the cost is approaching $1,000 a foot,” he said.

The council also approved a second bid with Level, LLC for paving sidewalks and parking areas at Cody Park in the amount of $124,864.75. The improvements are part of ongoing renovations at the park, including new tennis and pickleball courts.

Kelliher announced the courts will be temporarily closed for approximately three weeks starting at the end of April for painting and finishing work.

“The company is coming back to finish the tennis and pickleball courts. It’s a very precise and time-consuming process,” he said. “It will cost about $130,000 to paint the courts, so we need people to stay off them while the work is done.”

The mayor added the courts will be locked and clearly marked as closed, and the city plans to host grand opening events once the project is complete.

In other business, the council held first readings and took action on three ordinances related to paving projects on Francis Street. Ordinances No. 4204, 4205 and 4206 would create paving districts extending from Tabor Avenue to Newberry Access.

The council also approved second readings to annex the Otter First and Second Subdivisions, Majors 3 Brothers Administrative Subdivisions, and Glennfields 3rd Subdivision into city limits. Kelliher said construction on the Francis Street paving could begin as early as this summer, supporting further development in the area.

The Hot Sheets: April 16, 2025

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (April 15, 2025) — Students from North Platte St. Patrick’s Catholic Schools are heading to Atlanta this June after a standout performance at the 2025 Nebraska SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference.

Two St. Pat’s teams took top honors at the state level and will represent Nebraska at the national competition. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies Team — Natalia Wiezorek, Stephanie Budke, Savvy Miles, MaKenna Nelson, Dany Zheng, Miranda Huggenberger, and Kaelyn Brandt — earned first place, marking their fourth consecutive state title. The team previously placed third and twice finished second at the national level.

The Chapter Business Procedure Team — made up of Aashi Naidoo, Dimitri Pettit, Nick Krondak, Anah Caudillo, Jack Condon, and Coltan Ham — also secured first place. The win extends the team’s five-year state championship streak, highlighting their strength in collaboration and leadership.

Several students earned individual recognition as well. Wiezorek received the Jake Duncan Outstanding Leadership Award, honoring her service and leadership within SkillsUSA. Nelson placed first in Medical Terminology and will compete nationally in the health science category, while Zheng earned third place in Medical Math.

Since its founding during the 2020–2021 school year, the St. Pat’s SkillsUSA chapter has grown into one of the state’s most successful programs, known for leadership, service, and professionalism.

St. Pat’s SkillsUSA Teams Advance to Nationals After Strong Showing at State Conference

SUTHERLAND, Neb. (April 15, 2025) — One person is dead and another hospitalized following a high-speed crash Monday near the intersection of North Prairie Trace Road and West Snake Road, north of Sutherland, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies and Sutherland first responders were dispatched around midday on Monday, April 14 after a report that a vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree.

When deputies arrived, first responders were attending to the male driver, identified as 24-year-old Alexander Gomez of Sutherland, who was found outside the vehicle. A female passenger, identified as 22-year-old Jade Torres of Sutherland, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigators, evidence showed the 2014 Ford Explorer was traveling southbound on North Prairie Trace Road at a very high rate of speed. The vehicle went airborne after crossing a set of railroad tracks, landed, then went airborne a second time. While airborne, the vehicle rolled a quarter turn before the roof collided with a large cottonwood tree. The impact crushed the roof into the passenger compartment.

Gomez was transported to Great Plains Health with serious injuries, including a fractured neck, a collapsed right lung, a fractured shoulder blade, and brain bruising. He remains hospitalized as of the latest report.

Authorities said Gomez consented to a blood-alcohol test, which returned positive for alcohol. The Sheriff's Department said he will be arrested at a later date.
