&nbsp; Ranchers and cattle producers interested in learning about the latest research in range livestock production from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln are encouraged to register for the 2024 Nebraska Ranch Practicum offered by Nebraska Extension.

The practicum will be held during eight sessions over the course of three seasons to cover the production cycle of livestock and forage resources. Participants will learn about a variety of topics, including the effective use of decision support tools to evaluate management and marketing alternatives, plant identification, range condition and grazing strategies, wildlife management, evaluation of cow body condition scores, and beef cattle production systems.

The practicum is June 4 and 5, July 10, September 4 and 5, and November 7, 2024; and January 7 and 8, 2025. Classroom activities will open and close the practicum in North Platte with the remainder of the classes conducted at the University of Nebraska's Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory, a working ranch with education and research facilities, near Whitman.

The registration fee is $675. The fee for a spouse is an additional $350. Registration covers educational materials, noon meals and breaks. Participants are responsible for travel and lodging expenses. The practicum can count for college or continuing education credit.&nbsp;&nbsp;To register, submit a completed application and registration fee by May 3. Applications will not be accepted after that date. Enrollment is limited to 35 participants. Applicants will be notified of their status no later than May 20. Register now for the Nebraska Ranch Practicum

Lincoln County Office of Emergency Management, and local first responders, will be working with the 72nd Civil Support Team in the local communities to conduct joint Hazmat and Law Enforcement exercises. The purpose of these exercises is to establish and refine valuable partnerships between local, state, and federal agencies in responding to incidents involving hazardous materials that may overwhelm local resources.

The exercises will be conducted on the 12th and 14th of March 2024, with responders participating in the North Platte communities. The major activities are intentionally planned to be conducted away from heavily populated areas, in the interest of safety, but some aspects may be noticed within the city.

Residents are advised there may be responder vehicle movement and operational response actions that may pose a danger to unsuspecting observers and are therefore asked to refrain from entering areas marked "Exercise in Progress" or “TRAINING” in the interest of uninterrupted training activity and for their own personal safety.

Members of the Voiture Locale #1068 Forty and Eight Military Organization met the chapter’s scholarship recipients last week. The reception happened during a Forty and Eight Scholarship Dinner in Paxton on Tuesday.

The Forty and Eight chapter established a military nurses scholarship through the North Platte Community College Foundation in recognition of the hard work of nursing professionals and to encourage the next generation of nurses to complete their education.

This year the recipients of the $500 scholarship were NPCC students Brittney Douglass and Sarah Caudy, both of North Platte.

The Forty and Eight was formed in 1920 by American Legionnaires as an honor society, and from its earliest days, has been committed to charitable aims.

The name Forty and Eight is derived from the capacity of box cars in France during World War I, which could hold either 40 men or eight horses.

The Forty and Eight’s purpose is to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution, promote the well-being of veterans, their widows, widowers and orphans and to actively participate in selected charitable endeavors.

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with McPherson County Schools Superintendent Tim Vanderheiden as McPherson County School is currently in open enrollment until Friday, March 15th. Vanderheiden joined McPherson County Schools in July of 2020. From the simplicity of rural Nebraska to the hustle and bustle of city life, Jessica Epting is proof that humble beginnings are sometimes the best kind.

Epting is a visual information specialist at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the largest library in the world, where her days are full of creativity and intrigue. It’s a place in life that she began working toward at a young age – she just didn’t know it at the time.

“I had a very different trajectory for my life when I was growing up,” Epting said. “But I think if young me could have seen where I am now, she would have been pleased.”

Epting was raised in North Platte, Neb., a community of just under 24,000 people, nestled between twin rivers and flanked by sandhills and cornfields.

One of nine children, Epting was homeschooled from second grade on. Homeschooling allowed her to explore and focus on things she was passionate about such as artistic expression.

“I enjoyed being creative growing up – sewing, knitting, crocheting, writing poems and constantly painting my bedroom walls,” Epting said. “My mom often tells the story of me moving around the same flower in the Microsoft Paint program in the middle of the night, planning a future design.”

Before she graduated, she started researching interior design and fashion design colleges.

“At that time, I didn’t even know what graphic design was,” Epting said. “My mom came to me one day with information about a new program Mid-Plains Community College, our local community college, was starting. It was graphic design and, after looking through the information, I realized that was what I’d been looking for.”

Because her mother, Dot Epting, worked at MPCC, Jessica was already familiar with the school. She had taken some dual credit classes through MPCC in high school, so it was an easy decision to enroll full-time following her graduation in 2006.

“I really enjoyed my classes at Mid-Plains,” Jessica said. “I felt like all the stuff I had been creating at home on my own, like designs in Microsoft Paint and other Desktop Publishing software, suddenly had a direction – just at a more advanced level. It was as if everything lined up for me to take those next steps.”

She found the small classes sizes and one-on-one instruction to be beneficial in helping her transition from homeschooling to a college setting. In turn, homeschooling proved to be a benefit in terms of her college study habits.

“Homeschooling helped me be pretty independent about my studies,” Jessica said. “I could take care of projects myself and didn’t have to be held by the hand. However, I think it would have been a bit overwhelming to enter a university space right away. It also would have been harder to get close to my classmates and instructors in a larger setting, and that’s part of what I loved so much about my college experience.”

She immediately appreciated how up to date MPCC was with its computer programs and materials.

“There were some things we had in our labs before even the larger universities did,” Jessica said. “I feel like I got a jump-start by going to Mid-Plains.”

Jessica took courses from MPCC for three years. When she first started, half of them were in McCook, more than an hour away. Once a week, she would make the drive to take three graphic design classes. The time in between was spent either in labs or taking her little sister to basketball practice across town.

“Becky Meyers [graphic design instructor] was very flexible with my schedule, and I appreciated that,” Jessica said. “I had a lot of good instructors at MPCC. I think the most important thing they taught me was how to learn. All the programs I worked with in college are out of date now because technology changes so fast, but I learned how to keep up with technology and about the foundation of design, which is the basis for what I do today.”

Upon entering the world of graphic design, Jessica also realized she had an interest in information technology and web design. Back then, those subjects weren’t offered as separate tracks.

“We had web design classes like JavaScript, but they weren’t required like they are now,” Jessica said. “Becky recommended them as electives since that’s what I was interested in. Looking back, I’m glad, not only that the college had those classes, but also that I tapped into them because my first job was with MPCC as a web master.”

Jessica had already started working in the college’s Public Information and Marketing Department as an intern. After earning associate degrees in both general studies and graphic design in May of 2009 she moved into the area web master role part-time.

She became the full-time area lead graphic designer four years later, and in 2013, had assumed both responsibilities to become MPCC’s area web master and graphic designer. Jessica continued her education online in addition to working and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Studies from Bellevue University in 2019.

By October of 2020, it was time for her to spread her wings. Jessica accepted a temporary position as a visual information specialist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Georgia before signing on full-time with the Library of Congress in March of 2021.

The projects Jessica works on are similar to those she did at MPCC.

“I create designs for presentations, brochures and annual reports,” Jessica said. “I also do a lot of promotional art for flyers, social media graphics and billboards to advertise events and exhibits and have done layout, design and book covers for the publishing office.”

One of her most memorable projects thus far has been the “Not an Ostrich: And Other Images from America’s Library” photo exhibit publication.

“It was so much fun and featured some really unique, interesting content – some of my favorite photos and some that had never been published before,” Jessica said. “The publishing office produced a book highlighting some of the photography from the exhibit, and I got to create the design.”

The past couple of years, Jessica has also had the opportunity to develop ads for the National Book Festival, which unites bestselling authors with thousands of book fans for author talks, panel discussions, autograph signings and other activities.

“When I was going to work one morning, I saw one of the ads on the digital screen in the train station, which was pretty cool,” Jessica said. “I’ve created signage for the Great Hall and step and repeat banners for red carpet events.”

She’s currently working on a book design for an exhibit that will open this spring, “Collecting Memories: Treasures from the Library of Congress.”

“It’s the first exhibit in the new David M. Rubenstein Treasures Gallery opening this June,” Jessica said. “I had the pleasure of designing the book’s interior to compliment the exhibit design. It’s probably my favorite project so far.”

One of the items that will be in the exhibit is “The Sounds of Earth,” a gold-plated copper disc that contains sounds and images that portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. NASA produced the recording in 1977 to accompany the Voyager 1 and 2 into outer space.

“Another one of the ‘treasures’ is the contents of Abraham Lincoln’s pockets from the day he was assassinated,” Jessica said. “He had two pairs of spectacles, a slightly used handkerchief, a button from his lapel, and ironically, a $5 Confederate bill. There are just so many neat things like that in the exhibit, and I got to be there when the photographer came to captures images for the book.”

It's a job that utilizes her skill set well. Many of her duties involve taking information and making it digestible for the public, which is also what she did during her time at MPCC.

“That’s basically what I do every day,” Jessica said. “I take these incredible items at the library and present them to the American people, which is who the library is really for. My life has evolved to living in a big city and constantly exploring new things and design really has made this life possible for me. I count that as a blessing.”

It’s a place in life that she began working toward at a young age – she just didn’t know it at the time.“I had a very different trajectory for my life when I was growing up,” Epting said. “But I think if young me could have seen where I am now, she would have been pleased.”<figure>

 </figure>Developing her passionEpting was raised in North Platte, Neb., a community of just under 24,000 people, nestled between twin rivers and flanked by sandhills and cornfields.One of nine children, Epting was homeschooled from second grade on. Homeschooling allowed her to explore and focus on things she was passionate about such as artistic expression.“I enjoyed being creative growing up – sewing, knitting, crocheting, writing poems and constantly painting my bedroom walls,” Epting said. “My mom often tells the story of me moving around the same flower in the Microsoft Paint program in the middle of the night, planning a future design.”Before she graduated, she started researching interior design and fashion design colleges.“At that time, I didn’t even know what graphic design was,” Epting said. “My mom came to me one day with information about a new program Mid-Plains Community College, our local community college, was starting. It was graphic design and, after looking through the information, I realized that was what I’d been looking for.”Because her mother, Dot Epting, worked at MPCC, Jessica was already familiar with the school. She had taken some dual credit classes through MPCC in high school, so it was an easy decision to enroll full-time following her graduation in 2006.“I really enjoyed my classes at Mid-Plains,” Jessica said. “I felt like all the stuff I had been creating at home on my own, like designs in Microsoft Paint and other Desktop Publishing software, suddenly had a direction – just at a more advanced level. It was as if everything lined up for me to take those next steps.”She found the small classes sizes and one-on-one instruction to be beneficial in helping her transition from homeschooling to a college setting. In turn, homeschooling proved to be a benefit in terms of her college study habits.“Homeschooling helped me be pretty independent about my studies,” Jessica said. “I could take care of projects myself and didn’t have to be held by the hand. However, I think it would have been a bit overwhelming to enter a university space right away. It also would have been harder to get close to my classmates and instructors in a larger setting, and that’s part of what I loved so much about my college experience.”She immediately appreciated how up to date MPCC was with its computer programs and materials.“There were some things we had in our labs before even the larger universities did,” Jessica said. “I feel like I got a jump-start by going to Mid-Plains.”Jessica took courses from MPCC for three years. When she first started, half of them were in McCook, more than an hour away. Once a week, she would make the drive to take three graphic design classes. The time in between was spent either in labs or taking her little sister to basketball practice across town.“Becky Meyers [graphic design instructor] was very flexible with my schedule, and I appreciated that,” Jessica said. “I had a lot of good instructors at MPCC. North Platte native – living beyond her dreams

On March 8, 2024 at approximately 12:46 am the McCook Police Department dispatch received a report of cattle out at the Red Willow County Fairgrounds.  The reporting party advised they were about to walk out of the fairgrounds and onto West 5th Street.

A Red Willow County Deputy was dispatched.  McCook Police Department officers responded to assist.

Upon arrival two bulls were located on the fairgrounds.  Members of the Mid Plains Community College Rodeo team responded to the fairgrounds and were able to secure the two bulls.  Officers were then advised there were still seven bulls at large.

An officer was able to locate bulls north of the UPS building after following their tracks in the fresh snow.  The bulls ran to the north across Q Street.  Six of the seven bulls were captured by utilizing a pen located just north of the intersection of West Q Street and West 10th Street.

The last bull evaded capture and was spotted a good time later in the area of Norris Avenue and Marsh Avenue.  Members of the MPCC Rodeo Team, including 3 on horseback pursued the bull southeast to Norris Park. 

The Rodeo Team members on horseback were able to safely lasso and capture the bull in Norris Park.  The bull was loaded on a trailer and returned to the Red Willow County Fairgrounds.

The McCook Police Department would like to thank the members of the Mid Plains Community College Rodeo Team for their fast response and assistance to capturing these animals.

The Hot Sheets: March 10th, 2024

North Platte Community College’s theater department will present “Plan 9 from Outer Space” next month.

The curtain will go up at 7:30 p.m. April 3-6 in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

The play is adapted from the science fiction horror film of the same name from the 1950s that was produced, written and directed by Ed Wood.

The plot focuses on aliens seeking to stop humanity from creating a doomsday weapon that could destroy the universe.

The extraterrestrials come up with “Plan 9,” a scheme to resurrect Earth’s dead. The aliens hope that by causing chaos, humans will listen to them, and if not, there will be no choice but to destroy mankind with zombie armies.

“’Plan 9 from Outer Space,’ is the epitome of ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ cinema,” said NPCC Theater Instructor Ritch Galvan, who will direct the play. “It is an unintentionally hilarious sci-fi ‘thriller’ from anti-genius Ed Wood that is celebrated for its staggering ineptitude. This stage adaption will be part homage and part mockery of the cult classic film.”

Admission for the play is $5 per person. The college’s students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with an ID.

Hershey, Ne - The S.O.S. came via a phone from a friend of Connie Kuhlman (owner of KJ's Boot's and Western Wear in Hershey) around 5:30pm Friday afternoon. "The roof has collapsed at KJ's" the caller said. "Can you come help get some of the inventory out of the store in case the whole ceiling comes down, and can you bring an enclosed trailer?"&nbsp;

The North Platte area had a record snow on Thursday night dropping 19 inches of snow in North Platte according to the National Weather Service in North Platte, Hershey most certainly had well over a foot as well. All that snow was too much for the western stores roof. Kevin Kuhlman, Connie's husband and co-owner had been clearing snow all day, and the last thing he planned to do Friday afternoon was clear the parking lot at KJ's which was closed all day due to the record snowfall. After he had cleared the lot, he went inside for a moment and when he turned the lights on he saw that the southeast side of the buildings ceiling had partially collapsed. Then came the flood of phone calls to friends and family who raced to Hershey with enclosed trailers and moving dolly's and began clearing out the south part of the store, not knowing how stable the roof was at that point.

Just after 8pm someone posted a facebook message to the village of Hershey social media page asking for help, and the community did not disappoint.&nbsp;

More than 30 plus people filled KJ's helping move the rest of the inventory to safe places. The Hershey Fire Department also came with members of their volunteer department to help assess the problems in the building and to come up with a temporary plan to stabilize it.&nbsp;

KJ's will be closed over the weekend, but hope to have their doors back open soon after repairs are made.&nbsp;

 </figure>Hershey, Ne - The S.O.S. came via a phone from a friend of Connie Kuhlman (owner of KJ's Boot's and Western Wear in Hershey) around 5:30pm Friday afternoon. "The roof has collapsed at KJ's" the caller said. "Can you come help get some of the inventory out of the store in case the whole ceiling comes down, and can you bring an enclosed trailer?"&nbsp;The North Platte area had a record snow on Thursday night dropping 19 inches of snow in North Platte according to the National Weather Service in North Platte, Hershey most certainly had well over a foot as well. All that snow was too much for the western stores roof. Kevin Kuhlman, Connie's husband and co-owner had been clearing snow all day, and the last thing he planned to do Friday afternoon was clear the parking lot at KJ's which was closed all day due to the record snowfall. After he had cleared the lot, he went inside for a moment and when he turned the lights on he saw that the southeast side of the buildings ceiling had partially collapsed. Then came the flood of phone calls to friends and family who raced to Hershey with enclosed trailers and moving dolly's and began clearing out the south part of the store, not knowing how stable the roof was at that point.<figure>

North Platte, NE - Several organizations are working together to help sponsor a free conference to provide information about disability services and how to access those services.&nbsp; The Disabilities Resources Conference will be held April 19-20, 2024 at North Platte Bethel Church.&nbsp; Conference presenters will be staff members with PTI (Parent, Training and Information), an organization based in Omaha. The conference is for parents, caregivers, educators, and any agency workers who want to learn more about serving those with disabilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;The schedule each day will have educational sessions in the morning followed by afternoon appointments for persons in need of assistance in completing paperwork. Topics to be presented include:&nbsp; Transition Plans, Applying for Developmental Disability Services, SSI:&nbsp; Social Security Income for a Dependent Adult, and Decision Making Options.&nbsp; The PTI staff will dedicate the afternoon to working one on one with those who need assistance in completing paperwork.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;Since July of 2023, 12 organizations have had representatives involved in Families 1st Partnership hosted discussions to bring more education and support for individuals with disabilities—both adults and families whose children are disabled.&nbsp; Many of these organization representatives along with family members are aware of the challenges in accessing programs that provide continued education for those with a disability.&nbsp; The timing of enrollment to such programs is crucial to ensure support for the individual and the family.&nbsp; This is also an area where families may not have all the information that they need.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - A winter storm rolled into the area yesterday evening and blasted North Platte with snow. The snow began falling just around 5:00pm Thursday and as the evening progressed, the snow came flying done. &nbsp;

According to the National Weather Service, North Platte Office, a new single-day record was shattered when the weather service reported at 6:00am that 17.4" of snow was recorded. The previous record 13.9" that was set on January 18th, 2023.&nbsp;

&nbsp; Nebraska Department of Transportation crews are still clearing roads and travel is not advised.&nbsp;I-80 westbound is still closed from Paxton to Kearney while I-80 eastbound is closed from Sidney to Gothenburg. Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) will be offering Vaccines for Children at public clinics in March.&nbsp; Anyone two months of age and older are invited to get their vaccinations. With the recent outbreak of measles in the United States, we encourage all residents to be up to date with their MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine. If you have questions about your vaccination status, call your medical provider or contact SWNPHD at 308-345-4223.

Curtis&nbsp;– Monday, March 11th, 4:30-5:30 pm at Medicine Valley High School.

Trenton-&nbsp;Tuesday, March 19th, 3:30-4:30 pm at Hitchcock County High School library.

Snowfall forces eastbound and westbound closures for I-80, Highway 30 considered impassable

Dustin Clapp is North Platte Community College’s Business Student of the Month for March.

Clapp is a nontraditional student. He graduated from Arthur County High School in 2007 and is currently studying business administration at NPCC.

He selected NPCC because of the flexibility it allows. Clapp can take classes online or in-person, whichever he prefers.

“The faculty at NPCC has been wonderful,” Clapp said. “I feel like all of my instructors are just as invested in my success as I am.”

Business Instructor Angie Chittick nominated Clapp for the Student of the Month recognition. She has taught him in several classes.

“I still remember Dustin’s first class,” Chittick said. “You could visibly see his nervousness. As Dustin settled into his first semester, he not only excelled academically but also gained self-confidence. Over the past year, Dustin’s character and strong work ethic have been exemplary. The compassion and assistance that he shows to students who are struggling is remarkable. Dustin goes out of his way to help others. There is no doubt that he will have a very successful and rewarding future.”

Clapp’s most memorable moment at NPCC thus far has been qualifying for the Dean’s List.

He’s a member of the college’s National Society of Leadership and Success organization, and when not focusing on academics, Clapp can be found building and repairing computers.

He’s currently on track to graduate in the spring of 2025, after which, he’s considering opening a diesel repair shop.

There is no doubt that he will have a very successful and rewarding future.”Clapp’s most memorable moment at NPCC thus far has been qualifying for the Dean’s List.He’s a member of the college’s National Society of Leadership and Success organization, and when not focusing on academics, Clapp can be found building and repairing computers.He’s currently on track to graduate in the spring of 2025, after which, he’s considering opening a diesel repair shop.

Members of Alpha Beta Theta, North Platte Community College’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, are planning a Trash-A-Thon litter pickup to help beautify the community.

The event is open to the public and volunteers are needed. The pickup will begin at 10 a.m. March 23.

Volunteers are asked to gather in the fireplace area of the McDonald-Belton Building on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd. Trash bags, gloves, vests, tools and water will be provided.
