Betty JoAnn Bernhardt passed away on August 25, 2024, in Imperial, Nebraska. She was born on November 1, 1939, in Greeley, Colorado to Philip and Pauline (Stroh) Williams, she was the youngest of two children with her brother, Kenneth. JoAnn, as she was known, brought immediate joy to the family.&nbsp;

From her early years spent in the Gill, Colorado area she never shied from helping on the farm or tending to chores with the livestock, always wanting to be with her dad. This led to a strong work ethic which carried out the rest of her life until her passing.&nbsp;

&nbsp;She attended school in Gill from elementary until high school where she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen, graduating in 1957. While in school she became a social butterfly with a personality that attracted many friends whom she carried the rest of her life.&nbsp;

On December 2, 1957, at St. Paul's Congregational Church in Greeley, Colorado she exchanged vows with her husband Donald Bernhardt with the marriage lasting until his passing in 2021. To this union they welcomed sons Kerry and Kurt with daughter Darcy completing the family. Together they raised their children on a small farm in the Gill area. Joann was always very active in her children’s lives during school, 4-H, FFA, and livestock shows.&nbsp;

In pursuit of their farming dreams, the Bernhardt family took a chance and relocated to Champion, Nebraska, in January of 1976. Joann played a key role in establishing their family farm, whether it required driving a tractor, flood irrigating or driving a truck during harvest. Later in the 1980s she helped establish Triple B Commodities, a family trucking company where she took care of the record keeping and dispatching the many trucks where they needed to be. This endeavor continued until her health began to fail in 2018.&nbsp;

Joann found joy in gardening and keeping an immaculate yard after her and Donnie purchased their home in Imperial in 1989. She was particularly a good cook specializing in German dishes. When Joann served a meal, small portions were never an option. In early years, Joann enjoyed going to Dutch Hop dances and found comradery in the sport of bowling. Yet, her greatest joy came when she became a grandparent and was able to cheer on her grandchildren at their many activities. She also cherished the many trips she was able to take to Ft. Myers, Florida to visit her daughter.&nbsp;

For over two decades JoAnn embraced her role at the Imperial Inn as a front desk clerk, where she formed lasting connections with guests and took pleasure in creating a welcoming atmosphere. Her positive and joyful attitude always helped uplift the spirits of her coworkers, making her an invaluable team member at the Inn.&nbsp;

As a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Imperial, Joann found fellowship as well as being a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. Her community involvement reflected her unwavering commitment to helping others and bringing a smile to anyone she came into contact with.&nbsp;

JoAnn is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Donald; and her brother, Kenneth Williams.&nbsp;

She is survived by her sons, Kerry and Kurt (Kristi) Bernhardt all of Chase County, NE; her beloved daughter, Darcy Bernhardt (Joseph Mooney) of Fort Myers, Florida; four grandchildren, Preston Bernhardt, Alexa Banks (Jeff), Austin Bernhardt and Ryan Bernhardt, two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Kinsley; and numerous other relatives and friends who will carry forward her legacy of love and kindness.&nbsp;

Visitation for JoAnn will take place on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. (MT) at Liewer Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at 10:30 A.M. (MT) at Zion Lutheran Church in Imperial, with Pastor Scott Adle officiating. Interment will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Imperial.&nbsp;

David Gerald “Pee Wee” Bell, 87, of North Platte, NE passed away peacefully on Friday, August 23, 2024 at Miles Memory Care Assisted Living in Papillion, NE. &nbsp;

Cremation was chosen and a graveside service will be announced at a later date in North Platte City Cemetery. &nbsp;Carpenter Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;William Seymour "Bill" Richardson, age 82 of Valentine, Nebraska, was born on November 19, 1942 in Valentine, Nebraska to William J. and Ennis Lovejoy Richardson.&nbsp; He passed away on August 25, 2024 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Bill attended Valentine Elementary and Valentine High Schools.&nbsp; He later attended El Centro, CA and Chadron State College and ran track.&nbsp; Bill married Julie Kotrous on January 2, 1988 in Las Vegas, Nevada and on July 26, 2018 in Valentine, Nebraska. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Bill was a retired rancher and truck driver.&nbsp; He was a 50+ year Master Mason of the Silver Cord Lodge No. 244 and attended St. John's Episcopal Church.&nbsp; He had a great lover for Harley Davidson Motorcycles and that started with a ride on his Uncle Lorne's Harley in the 1960's.&nbsp; Buying his first brand new Harley in 1978, that same motorcycle still remains in the family today.&nbsp; He enjoyed being on the road, whether it be a day trip or a two week trip, gathering over 4 million miles in a semi-truck.&nbsp; Bill loved to visit, whether he had known you for&nbsp; years or just met, he always loved to engage in conversation.&nbsp; Bill had a very strong work ethic which he has passed down to his children.&nbsp; After a long week of work, Bill would enjoy a Black Velvet and water (the amount of water depended on if any speeding tickets were involved that week). &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;He was very proud that at 73 years old, he had all of his points on his driver's license since first getting his license at 16 years old.&nbsp; After his 3rd retirement, he enjoyed yard work and scooping snow for his neighbors, having coffee with his friends and motorcycle trips with his motorcycle gang.&nbsp; Bill was always a willing dance partner, a constant jokester, a phenomenal friend, and a seamless father. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Preceding Bill in death were his parents, William J. Richardson and Ennis Lovejoy Richardson; and a sister, Shirley Jean Richardson. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Survivors include his wife, Julie; children: Kelly (Mark) King of Las Vegas, NV, BJ (Kathleen) Richardson of Las Vegas, NV, Matthew (Grace) Richardson of Bellevue, NE, and Megan (James) Simmons of Kansas City; grandchildren: Ryan Glazier of Las Vegas, Rachel (Megan) Oaks of Las Vegas, Joe Richardson of Las Vegas, Teresa Richardson of New York, and Evelyn Richardson of Bellevue, NE; and great granddaughters: Rilynn and Kinnsley Glasier of Las Vegas. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;A Celebration of Life Service is planned sometime in November around his birthday. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine, Nebraska is entrusted with the service arrangements.

"Marti" Barton, age 97, of Kearney, Nebraska, formerly of North Platte, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 26, 2024 at Mother Hull Home in Kearney where she had resided for the past three years.&nbsp; Martha was born on February 22, 1927 in Berkley, Kentucky, the daughter of Edger and Dovie (DeWene) Lindsey. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Martha attended school and grew up in northern Illinois and southern Kentucky.&nbsp; She married Ivan K. "Bud" Barton on April 16, 1945 in Arkansas and together they had two children.&nbsp; The family moved to Hastings, Nebraska for six years and then to North Platte, Nebraska for 73 years.&nbsp; Martha was a "Rosey Riveter" during World War II.&nbsp; She was a member of the First Christian Church in North Platte and sang with a wonderful voice any time she was asked for church, funerals, or other functions.&nbsp; She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts in the 1950's for several years and was a member of the North Platte American Legion Auxiliary for many years.&nbsp; She was a devoted wife, wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and an excellent cook.&nbsp; She was also a self-taught accomplished and amazing artist.&nbsp; Martha will always be remembered for feeding her family and friends with the Word of God and unbelievable great food and unconditional love. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Martha was preceded by her parents, Edgar and Dovie; her husband of 42 years, Ivan; sisters Rebia Jackson and Vergina Crider; brothers Frank, Jimben, James, and Nick Lindsey. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Those left to cherish Martha's memory are her son, Charles K. Martha E. "Marti" Barton  (1927-2024)

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Zelpha Mae Mason, former Cozad, Nebraska resident, passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2024 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 92.&nbsp; Zelpha was born on January 17, 1932 in Callaway, Nebraska to Frank and Alberta (Ogg) Niles.&nbsp; On October 28, 1950, she married Walter Mason at Callaway, Nebraska.&nbsp; Their union was blessed with two children: John and Barbara.&nbsp; She dedicated her life to being a housewife, mother, and grandmother, pouring her love and attention into her family. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Zelpha was known for her perfectionist nature; everything in her life had to be just right.&nbsp; Her sassy personality brought a sparkle to those around her, making her a joy to be with at any gathering.&nbsp; A strong woman, she proudly survived cancer three times, demonstrating her resilience and spirit. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests.&nbsp; Zelpha loved Dairy Queen Blizzards and spent many happy hours playing pinochle with friends and family.&nbsp; She had a passion for quilting and sewing, creating beautiful pieces that will be treasured forever.&nbsp; Traveling was another great love of hers; she and Walter explored almost all 50 states and ventured to Mexico, Canada, and Sweden. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Zelpha's presence will be greatly missed by all who knew her.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers George Niles and Ernest Niles; and brother-in-law, Steve Mattox. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Survivors include her son, John (Mary) Mason of Bennington, Nebraska; her daughter, Barbara Mason Cloeter of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren Andrew (Heather Joslin and Sky) Mason of Omaha, Nebraska, Ryan (Nicole) Mason of Bennington, Nebraska and their children Peyton, Layla, Walker, and Aaron (Lizzie) Mason of Omaha, Nebraska, Michaela Franco of Omaha, Nebraska, Brittany Cloeter of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Rachel Cloeter of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister, Stella Mattox of North Platte, Nebraska; brothers Charles (Joanne) Staton of Cozad, Nebraska and Jim (Jill) Niles of Grand Island, Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 30, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Cozad, Nebraska.&nbsp; Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery near Callaway, Nebraska. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Visitation with family present will be on Thursday, August 20, 2024 from 5 to 7 p.m., with Rosary to follow at Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad, Nebraska.

 </figure>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Zelpha Mae Mason, former Cozad, Nebraska resident, passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2024 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 92.&nbsp; Zelpha was born on January 17, 1932 in Callaway, Nebraska to Frank and Alberta (Ogg) Niles.&nbsp; On October 28, 1950, she married Walter Mason at Callaway, Nebraska.&nbsp; Their union was blessed with two children: John and Barbara.&nbsp; She dedicated her life to being a housewife, mother, and grandmother, pouring her love and attention into her family. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Zelpha was known for her perfectionist nature; everything in her life had to be just right.&nbsp; Her sassy personality brought a sparkle to those around her, making her a joy to be with at any gathering.&nbsp; A strong woman, she proudly survived cancer three times, demonstrating her resilience and spirit. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests.&nbsp; Zelpha loved Dairy Queen Blizzards and spent many happy hours playing pinochle with friends and family.&nbsp; She had a passion for quilting and sewing, creating beautiful pieces that will be treasured forever.&nbsp; Traveling was another great love of hers; she and Walter explored almost all 50 states and ventured to Mexico, Canada, and Sweden. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Zelpha's presence will be greatly missed by all who knew her.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers George Niles and Ernest Niles; and brother-in-law, Steve Mattox. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Survivors include her son, John (Mary) Mason of Bennington, Nebraska; her daughter, Barbara Mason Cloeter of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren Andrew (Heather Joslin and Sky) Mason of Omaha, Nebraska, Ryan (Nicole) Mason of Bennington, Nebraska and their children Peyton, Layla, Walker, and Aaron (Lizzie) Mason of Omaha, Nebraska, Michaela Franco of Omaha, Nebraska, Brittany Cloeter of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Rachel Cloeter of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister, Stella Mattox of North Platte, Nebraska; brothers Charles (Joanne) Staton of Cozad, Nebraska and Jim (Jill) Niles of Grand Island, Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 30, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Cozad, Nebraska.&nbsp; Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery near Callaway, Nebraska. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Visitation with family present will be on Thursday, August 20, 2024 from 5 to 7 p.m., with Rosary to follow at Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad, Nebraska.

Home, Arkansas, Michael (Connie) Bell of Alexander, Arkansas, and Debra Elson of North Platte, Nebraska.

Nadine was always a child at heart and will be missed by all who knew her.&nbsp; Her family and friends are grateful she is finally at peace.

Nadine is survived by her four children, nine grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, along with many other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers and sons-in-laws Ray Nelson, Ray Krzykowski, and Tim Elson, and a granddaughter, Victoria.

Nadine Bell  (1935-2024)

Emabel Catherine Berryman was an avid reader, a card sharp, and a puzzle master.&nbsp; She was an adventurer, a survivor, and a thriver.&nbsp; She pushed open steel Quonset doors like a shopping cart into her 90's.&nbsp; Born in Pratt, Kansas on October 14, 1923, she was a daughter, sister, and wife; but moreover, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother.&nbsp; Her family was her greatest achievement, accomplished with the love of her life, Harley Frank Berryman, who preceded her in passing after 62 years together that started at a dance in San Francisco in 1942.

They were 18.&nbsp; He was a sailor.&nbsp; She was a raven-haired beauty riveting nose cones on Mustangs by day and going to dances by night.&nbsp; She lived in a small apartment overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge with her sister, eating as much ice cream as they wanted, something that never happened when they were kids in the midst of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression.&nbsp; Ice cream and income and dances were truly Shangri-La.

It was also a time of war, and her sailor was sent to sea for nine months.&nbsp; She wrote to him every day.&nbsp; They returned to the Midwest after the war, married in June 0f 1946, and settled on the family homestead north of Cozad, Nebraska where she gardened, gathered eggs and labored, but refused to milk cows.&nbsp; She was impervious to what she did not want to learn, and uniquely creative with what she did.&nbsp; Her house was a riot of colors and patterns, and she crafted with all available materials, including plastic six-pack rings rendered into pink and blue hyacinth blooms.

She and her sailor and cousins and friends followed the hopping Highway 30 dance circuit for several years after the war.&nbsp; She loved Guy Lombardo and he loved Tommy Dorsey.&nbsp; They saw both perform.&nbsp; Pair by pair, the dancers settled down into playing pitch, with her as their undisputed champ.

Emabel and Harley would raise two children through a tumultuous time that saw them both hospitalized with serious conditions that they both overcame.&nbsp; She raised kids, helped operate the farm on a budget and managed a retail business for several years.&nbsp; She was the general manager of Fabric Fair in Cozad during the 1970's, and applied her sewing skills to everything from Barbie clothes to a padded motocross suit to curtains.&nbsp; She was an engineer with fabric.&nbsp; Her creations bore her particular signature.

She loved a nice outfit and great dessert, but was never self-indulgent.&nbsp; If one of her kids bought her new boots, she would duct tape the old ones for walking to the mailbox.&nbsp; She liked Louis L'Amour novels.&nbsp; She loved watching The Virginian and Walker, Texas Ranger.&nbsp; Her favorite color was red and her favorite song was "I Left My Heart In San Francisco," because of that dance in 1942.

For most of 62 years, she made three meals a day for the handsome sailor, sticking by his side through thick and thin, through heartbreak and joy, car rides through the Sandhills and road trips to California, until the day came he had to go and was laid to rest at 84.

She mastered living on the farm by then and proceeded to do so on her terms.&nbsp; She visited her beauty parlor weekly and went to lunch with her close friends.&nbsp; She wrote letters, played solitaire and covered the kitchen table with 1,000 piece puzzles constructed one atop the other.&nbsp; She would be adopted by a small black cat who watched over her for several years, though realized early on that Emabel did not appreciated the mouse offerings left on her front step.

"I never expected to live this long," she said one day around her 100th birthday, by then living nearer her multigenerational family.&nbsp; Perhaps it was growing up in 1920's Kansas with none of the creature comforts we take for granted today that formed the fiber of her being and the depth of her resilience.&nbsp; Thus it was not without some fire that she left the mortal coil in the early morning hours of Monday, August 26, 2024, having been surrounded by loved ones.

Survivors are son, James H. and Gayle (Thornton) Berryman; daughter, Deborah D. McAdams; grandchildren Cherease R. Berryman, Jacliyn Berryman, and Kai Szoka; great-grandchildren Ashton and Courtney (DeHart) Berryman and Castiel Berryman-Szoka; and great-great grandchild, Amelia Berryman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley F. Berryman; and her parents, William E. and Bertha E. (Elliot) Chancelor.

A private graveside service will be held.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Jean Marie Kendall passed away peacefully on August 24, 2024.&nbsp; Jean was a loving wife and mother and loyal friend who lived her life courageously despite poor health. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Jean was born on&nbsp; November 12, 1949 to her parents, Frank and Pauline Weber, in Corwith, Iowa.&nbsp; She grew up on the family farm with her four siblings.&nbsp; Jean graduated from Corwith-Wesley High School in 1968.&nbsp; In 1970, she graduated from&nbsp; Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa after studying fashion merchandising. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;On April 29, 1972, she married the love of her life, Roland Richard Kendall.&nbsp; They were deeply devoted to each other in marriage for 52 years and raised two children, Nicolle Schieffer (Jason) of Kenosha, Wisconsin and Michael Kendall (Michelle) of Scituate, Massachusetts.&nbsp; Jean enjoyed her five grandchildren, Matthew Schieffer, maeve Kendall, Emma Schieffer, Fiona Kendall, and Kellen Kendall. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Jean enjoyed spending time with her husband, playing cards, traveling, and was a wonderful cook.&nbsp; She was an avid reader and valued education for her children and grandchildren. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She is also survived by her four siblings, Cynthia McBride (Roger) of Mason City, Iowa, Connie Noah of Ft. Jean Marie Kendall  (1949-2024)

Merlyn grace, age 83, of rural Lewellen, Nebraska passed away Thursday evening, August 22, 2024 at the Garden County Health Services Hospital in Oshkosh, Nebraska after a courageous battle with cancer.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT at Ash Hollow Cemetery near Lewellen, Nebraska with Brenda Tophoj, PMA officiating.&nbsp; A time of fellowship and a meal will follow at the Lewellen Tiger Den.&nbsp; Please come as you are, cowboy boots and jeans are just fine, and share stories and memories of Merlyn.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Merlyn George Grace was born on July 22, 1941 to Dale and Vi Grace at their home on the ranch near Lewellen, Nebraska.&nbsp; Merlyn attended school in Lewellen, graduating in 1959.&nbsp; As a little boy, many days were spent spearing catfish in the river with his brothers.&nbsp; While in high school, Merlyn was active in all sports, as well as a member of band, chorus, and a boy's quartet.

After high school, Merlyn moved to the family ranch in the Sandhills, 40 miles north of Lewellen.&nbsp; This is where he would call home for the next 37 years being a rancher.

He met Arlene Mekelburg while attending the stock show in Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; They later married on may 14, 1967.&nbsp; Merlyn and Arlene had two daughters, Geri in December 1969 and Julie in October 1973.

Merlyn was the definition of a true cattleman; God made him to be a rancher.&nbsp; He loved the Sandhills and his family.&nbsp; He had a great compassion for the cattle and believed in working hard for the family brand.&nbsp; Living in the Rackett community, Merlyn always felt grateful for all the good neighbors.&nbsp; Every first Saturday in June, at the Grace branding, was the perfect example of the value of good neighbors and friends who gathered from miles around.

Merlyn also had a passion for flying, following in his dad's footsteps, he got his pilot's license at an early age.&nbsp; Whether he was checking cattle, windmills, fences on the summer range, being the "eye of the sky" locating grass fires for the Rackett Volunteer Fire Department, or making that quick landing by a blowout to look for that perfect arrowhead, Merlyn always loved the view of the Sandhills from above in the Supercub.

Merlyn and Arlene retired and bought a home outside Lewellen in 1997.&nbsp; After moving closer to town, Merlyn stayed actively involved in the family farming operations.&nbsp; In the snowy months, on non-Husker gamedays, of course, Merlyn discovered a new hobby of woodworking in his shop.&nbsp; Being self-taught, he spent many hours building wishing wells while listening to the songs of Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard.&nbsp; Merlyn and Arlene celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in may 2024.

Merlyn is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Lewellen, Nebraska; daughters, Geri (Larry) Alworth of Oshkosh, Nebraska and Julie (Rick) Kreuter of Big Springs, Nebraska; grandchildren, Melissa (Brandon), Jenna, and Nick; great-grandchildren, Jailyn, Ember, Conner, Peyton, and Sage; sister, JoAnn Podkonyak; brother, Butch (Jeannie) Grace of Lewellen, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews.

Merlyn was preceded in death by his parents; Dale and Vi Grace; a brother, Marvin (Gail) Grace; brother-in-law, Johnny Podkonyak; and a niece, Holli (Podkonyak) Fessler.

 </figure>Merlyn grace, age 83, of rural Lewellen, Nebraska passed away Thursday evening, August 22, 2024 at the Garden County Health Services Hospital in Oshkosh, Nebraska after a courageous battle with cancer.Graveside memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT at Ash Hollow Cemetery near Lewellen, Nebraska with Brenda Tophoj, PMA officiating.&nbsp; A time of fellowship and a meal will follow at the Lewellen Tiger Den.&nbsp; Please come as you are, cowboy boots and jeans are just fine, and share stories and memories of Merlyn.Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.Holecheck-Bondegard Funeral Home and Cremations in Oshkosh, Nebraska is serving the Grace Family.In lieu of flowers, memorials in Merlyn's name can be made to the Lewellen Tiger Den, Lewellen Rural Fire Dept, or the Most Unlikely Place in Lewellen.Merlyn George Grace was born on July 22, 1941 to Dale and Vi Grace at their home on the ranch near Lewellen, Nebraska.&nbsp; Merlyn attended school in Lewellen, graduating in 1959.&nbsp; As a little boy, many days were spent spearing catfish in the river with his brothers.&nbsp; While in high school, Merlyn was active in all sports, as well as a member of band, chorus, and a boy's quartet.After high school, Merlyn moved to the family ranch in the Sandhills, 40 miles north of Lewellen.&nbsp; This is where he would call home for the next 37 years being a rancher.He met Arlene Mekelburg while attending the stock show in Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; They later married on may 14, 1967.&nbsp; Merlyn and Arlene had two daughters, Geri in December 1969 and Julie in October 1973.Merlyn was the definition of a true cattleman; God made him to be a rancher.&nbsp; He loved the Sandhills and his family.&nbsp; He had a great compassion for the cattle and believed in working hard for the family brand.&nbsp; Living in the Rackett community, Merlyn always felt grateful for all the good neighbors.&nbsp; Every first Saturday in June, at the Grace branding, was the perfect example of the value of good neighbors and friends who gathered from miles around.Merlyn also had a passion for flying, following in his dad's footsteps, he got his pilot's license at an early age.&nbsp; Whether he was checking cattle, windmills, fences on the summer range, being the "eye of the sky" locating grass fires for the Rackett Volunteer Fire Department, or making that quick landing by a blowout to look for that perfect arrowhead, Merlyn always loved the view of the Sandhills from above in the Supercub.Merlyn and Arlene retired and bought a home outside Lewellen in 1997.&nbsp; After moving closer to town, Merlyn stayed actively involved in the family farming operations.&nbsp; In the snowy months, on non-Husker gamedays, of course, Merlyn discovered a new hobby of woodworking in his shop.&nbsp; Being self-taught, he spent many hours building wishing wells while listening to the songs of Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard.&nbsp; Merlyn and Arlene celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in may 2024.Merlyn is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Lewellen, Nebraska; daughters, Geri (Larry) Alworth of Oshkosh, Nebraska and Julie (Rick) Kreuter of Big Springs, Nebraska; grandchildren, Melissa (Brandon), Jenna, and Nick; great-grandchildren, Jailyn, Ember, Conner, Peyton, and Sage; sister, JoAnn Podkonyak; brother, Butch (Jeannie) Grace of Lewellen, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews.Merlyn was preceded in death by his parents; Dale and Vi Grace; a brother, Marvin (Gail) Grace; brother-in-law, Johnny Podkonyak; and a niece, Holli (Podkonyak) Fessler.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Barbara Barnes Swanson was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on December 6th, 1936.&nbsp; She peacefully passed away on July 26th, 2024 in Tuscon, Arizona. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Barbara Barnes grew up in Holdrege, Nebraska with her older sister, Terry, and her parents, Betty and Dorsey.&nbsp; She graduated from Holdrege High in 1954 and enrolled at the University of Nebraska where she graduated in 1958.&nbsp; Shortly after graduating from UNL, she married Duane Swanson and moved to North Platte, Nebraska where she raised four children. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;In the early 1990's, she earned her master's degree in counseling from Kearney State College.&nbsp; For many years, she worked in social services in Nebraska, most notably for Lutheran Family Services and Adoption Consultants of Nebraska.&nbsp; She spent her later years in Tuscon, Arizona to be close to her adult children and grandchildren. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Barbara will be remembered for her magnetic charisma and engrossing conversations.&nbsp; She had many friends and made new ones wherever she went.&nbsp; She was a lifelong sports fan who enjoyed playing tennis and running in her younger years.&nbsp; Barbara loved music and frequently traveled to New Orleans to attend the Jazz and Heritage Festival.&nbsp; She was a fantastic cook, loved to entertain, and threw many legendary parties over the years.&nbsp; She will be dearly missed by her adoring family and friends. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Barbara is survived by her sister, Terry Ozenberger of Michigan; her four children: Joseph (Arden Collier) Swanson of Vallejo, California; Elizabeth Swanson, Emily (Matt) Stowell, and Charles (Ileana) Swanson, all of Tucson, Arizona; and her three grandchildren: Simon Stowell, Opal Swanson, and Paulo Swanson. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;A memorial celebration will be held in North Platte, Nebraska on October 12, 2024. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Planned Parenthood.

Rosa Lea Edwards, age 87 of Grand Island, formerly of Comstock died August 23, 2024, at the Emerald Lakeview Care Home in Grand Island.

Rosa Lea Edwards was born on March 7, 1937, at Almeria, NE to Archie and Beulah (Dunbar) Drake. Rosa grew up in Comstock and graduated from Comstock High School. She was married to Donald Edwards on August 4, 1956. Rosa Lea and Don honeymooned in Yellowstone. The family lived in many states, Arizonia, Nebraska, Idaho, North Dakota, and eventually moved to Ord, NE. After Don’s retirement, they moved to Comstock.&nbsp;

Rosa Lea was a master quilter, doing crafts, and other sewing. She was a Sunday School teacher at Wescott Baptist Church. She loved her church and loved teaching the children.&nbsp;

Cooking was another of her great talents. She could put a meal together at a moment’s notice.&nbsp;

Survivors include her children, Tommy Edwards of Grand Island, Wendy White of Grand Island, Linda (Bill) Granger of Sargent, and Ben (Lori) Edwards of Scotia. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include her 4 brothers, Royal (Annie) Drake of Victoria TX, Bob (Terry) Drake of Comstock, Bill (Mary Jane) Drake of Berwyn, and Dan (Darla) Drake of Bassett.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and brother Alan and his wife Zelda Drake.&nbsp;

Sheila Rae (Ummel) Ottun, 88, of Sargent, NE left her earthly life and entered her eternal home with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her family, Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Valley County Health Systems Ord, Nebraska.

Sheila was born to Clarence and Sylvia (Cherry) Ummel on September 23, 1935, in Cumro, Nebraska. Sheila grew up in a Christian home and made a personal decision to trust Jesus as her Savior in Sunday School class at age 9. She attended the Sunny Slope and Flat Bottom School Districts through eighth grade after which she went to Mason City High School, graduating in 1953.

In the fall of 1953, she began teaching in one-room schoolhouses. Her first school was Upper Catcreek where she had nine pupils. While teaching at Catcreek she continued to pursue her teaching certificate through Kearney Teachers College. She taught in rural one-room schools for seven years. The schools included Catcreek, Mount Olive/Burr Oak, and Snake Run.

In December of 1954, she met Darrel Ottun. They went on their first date to Homeward Trail Bible Camp on April 6, 1955. They were married on August 21, 1960, at Burr Oak Church. The Lord blessed them with five children, 14 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

In 1970, having a young family and a deep desire to ground them spiritually, Darrel and Sheila along with Darrel's brothers' families were instrumental in starting the Evangelical Free Church of Sargent, in which Sheila was a faithful and active member. She used her gift of teaching to invest in children, teaching Sunday School for much of her life. Later in her life she was a para-educator at Round Valley until it closed. Her love for children kept her young as she continued teaching at the preschool in the Sargent Evangelical Free Church for several years. Following the loss of Darrel in 2015, she volunteered at Valley County Hospice for 5 years.

Sheila had a great love for Jesus and her family. She was instrumental in leading her children to the Lord. She was an avid gardener and with the gift of hospitality, she was always cooking and baking for the many visitors who graced her home.

Sheila was preceded in death by her husband Darrel and her parents.

Sheila is survived by her brother Dennis (Sharon) Ummel; sisters-in-Law Donna Jacobsen and Anita Ottun; son, David (Cindy) Ottun and their children Tavis Ottun; Tessa (McKee) Sitts and their children Jordan and Josie; daughter Caroline (Larry) Folkers and their children Elizabeth (Aidan) Bentley, Daniel, Kathryn, and Justin; daughter Rebecca (Trent) Stimpert and their children Abby and Hannah; daughter Mary (Jonathan) Simpson and their children Jessica (Jake) Heck and their children Jethro and Jude, Aaron and (Alyssa) and their children Shiloh and Ivy; and Andrianna (Jamie) Mize; son Paul (Stacy) Ottun and their children Hope, Elsie, and Grant; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Sargent Evangelical Free Church, with Pastor Jon Simpson officiating. Sheila Ottun (1935-2024)

Norma Booten, age 80 of Anselmo, passed away at Callaway District Hospital with her daughters by her side on August 22, 2024.

A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Victoria Creek Cemetery. All are asked to wear Husker or casual attire. Norma was born March 27th, 1944, to Darrell &amp; Margaret Ferguson in Denver, Colorado. At the age of 2, Norma and her sister Jeanette moved in with her grandparents Charlie and Gertie Poland in the Sargent area. At the age of 12 Norma and her sister joined her mother and stepfather in the Bay area of California. Norma married Terry Booten on March 4th, 1965, and two daughters were born into this union: Tammy Jean and Toni Lynn.

In 1969, Terry and Norma returned to Nebraska and purchased the Anselmo Tavern. After the sale of the Tavern, Norma stayed home to raise her daughters. Norma once again joined the workforce when her daughters were older and was employed by the Merna Pack and later Becton Dickenson where she retired from after the death of her husband Terry.

Norma loved to attend her daughters' sporting events and could be heard cheering them and their team on. At times it was more entertaining to watch her and her excitement than it was to watch the game. She loved watching football, especially the Huskers, but her passion was Husker Volleyball. None of these compared to the joy she found in spending time with her family, she could sit and watch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play for hours, and they all adored “Grandma Boot”. Norma always had a warm smile, an infectious laugh, and a great sense of humor. She was always willing to lend a helping hand, cherished her friends, and loved unconditionally.

Norma is survived by daughters Tammy Burnett of Anselmo, and Toni (Carl) French of Broken Bow. Sister: Virginia Walker, Union City CA, Brothers: Don Walker, DE, Myron Walker and Tom (Diane) Walker, Hayward, CA. Grandchildren: Jamie French (Brennan Lech), Austin (Brooke) French, Justin (Jory) French, Tashia Burnett (Jaeven Howell) &amp; Cameron Burnett. Norma Booten (1944-2024)

Carl D. Christen, born on October 30, 1937, in the heartland of Nebraska in rural Anselmo, passed away on August 20, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. At the age of 86, Carl left this world after a life well-lived, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.

Carl was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, whose warmth and kindness touched everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Carol L. Christen, whose steadfast love and partnership was the cornerstones of his life. Together, they built a family filled with love, joy, and unwavering support.

Carl was the proud father of two sons, Bill and Bret, who carry forward his values of hard work, integrity, and compassion. He welcomed his daughter-in-law Karen into the family with open arms, treating her as one of his own. His three granddaughters, Alex, Maura, and Lindsey, were the lights of his life. Carl’s pride only grew as he welcomed Alex’s husband, Tee, into the family, and he was overjoyed to become a great-grandfather to the beautiful Ryan. Carl’s family was his greatest treasure, and he delighted in every moment spent with them.

Raised in the small town of Anselmo, Nebraska, Carl attended grade school there before furthering his high school education at Ag School in Curtis, Nebraska. It was during these formative years that Carl developed a strong work ethic and a deep love for the land, values that would stay with him throughout his life.

Carl was a man of faith and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, where he found a sense of community and purpose. His involvement in the church and the Knights of Columbus was a testament to his commitment to service and his belief in the importance of helping others.

One of Carl’s greatest passions was bowling, a love that began in his youth and continued throughout his life. He participated in his first national bowling tournament in 1962 alongside his future brother-in-law, Ron Connely, marking the beginning of a lifelong dedication to the sport. His love for bowling was rivaled only by his love for baseball, and after marrying Carol in 1963, Carl became actively involved in CYO baseball, where he enjoyed mentoring young athletes and sharing his passion for the game.

Carl was also a lover of the great outdoors. He cherished his time at his cabin on Johnson Lake, a place where he found peace and relaxation. Whether he was spending time on the water, enjoying the company of his family, or simply taking in the beauty of nature, Johnson Lake held a special place in Carl’s heart.

Golfing was another of Carl’s favorite pastimes, and he shared many memorable rounds with his dear friend Rick. Their camaraderie on the golf course was a source of joy and companionship for Carl, providing him with countless hours of fun and friendly competition.

After retirement from the post office, Carl found a new passion in working on clocks and watches at Fine Things. He was meticulous and patient, qualities that served him well in this intricate hobby. He also enjoyed the simple pleasure of having coffee with his friends, where he would share stories, laughter, and the latest news.

Carl D. Christen was a man of integrity, love, and loyalty. His gentle spirit and kind heart will be missed by all who knew him. As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. Rest in peace, Carl, until we meet again.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Echlyn Michael Ogier, who left us too soon at the age of 17 on August 15, 2024.

 A cherished son, brother, and friend, Echlyn was known for his infectious energy, kind heart, and bright future. Born on May 15, 2007, Echlyn was feisty, hard headed and determined. He loved listening to music, dancing, playing sports and hanging out with friends. 

Echlyn is survived by his parents, Amber and Jason Grafford of Minot, ND and Paul and Jami Ogier of Alma, NE; his siblings, Brayten Ogier, Zaxtyn and Kortyn Grafford, and Kaylan and Hendryx Ogier, and numerous other family members and friends who will miss him dearly. He is remembered for his warmth, generosity, and the countless moments of joy he shared with those he loved.

Echlyn Michael Ogier (2007-2024)

John Irwin Lloyd Piepho, 66, passed away on Friday, August 23rd, 2024. John was born in Keystone, Nebraska on February 20th, 1958 to Lloyd Carl Piepho and Eleanor Irene Graham Piepho. John graduated from Ogallala Senior High School in 1976. He went on to earn an Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology from Eastern Wyoming College in 1979. 

He married his wife Kimberly Ann Robertson on May 15th, 1982 and the two made a life together raising their two children: Meghan Xanthe Piepho who was born May 8th, 1984 and John Clements Piepho who was born May 10th, 1987. John was a dedicated man who lived his life in service to his family and his friends. He went to work for Haythorn Land &amp; Cattle at the age of 15 and he spent the next 46 years being a cowboy - the only thing he had ever wanted to be. 

In 2019, John and Kim moved into town and he began a new career with his son at a plumbing company where he learned a new way of life and got to serve his community in a new way. He was a champion, a husband, a father, and a man of God. John loved God with all his heart, soul and strength. He was the spiritual leader in his home and offered guidance, support and wisdom to others. John was known for his strong sense of purpose in work and in his faith. 

John is survived by his wife Kimberly Ann Piepho, his daughter Meghan and Tyler Griffin, his son JC and Megan Piepho, his two twin granddaughters, Jem and Belle Griffin, and his sister Julie Piepho and David Bee. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Eleanor Piepho and his grandparents Carl and Della Piepho and Lloyd and Mabel Graham. Memorial Services will be 3:00 pm Thursday, August 29th, 2024 at the New Hope Church in Ogallala with Pastor Matt Waitley officiating.

John I.L. Piepho (1958-2024)

Donna Jean Schledewitz, 76, of Maxwell, NE passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loving husband and family.&nbsp; Donna was born on November 26, 1947 in Osage, Iowa the daughter of George H. and Reka G. (Banker) Smidt.

Donna graduated from Hastings High School in 1965 and married the love of her life John Schledewitz on May 18, 1968 in Glenville, NE. &nbsp;She was first and foremost a loving a devoted wife and mother. &nbsp;She never missed a game or sporting event her children participated in and was an excellent homemaker and cook. &nbsp;Her special pancakes will be remembered by all. &nbsp;Donna was able to fulfill a dream of becoming a cosmetologist returning to school after raising her family. &nbsp;She owned and operated for over twenty years The Handy Hair Hut in North Platte until her retirement. &nbsp;She was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Platte, where she participated in the FLC Quilters and Eve Circles. &nbsp;She was also a member of the ag extension group, Galaxy Gals, and helped coach and cheer on the local Special Olympics. &nbsp;Donna will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish Donna’s memory are her husband of 56 years, John; daughter, Jill (Jim) Falcon of Maxwell; son, Johnny Schledewitz of North Platte; grandchildren, Jalissa Falcon, Jimmy (Karsen) Falcon and Justin (Halee) Falcon; great-grandchildren, Avery, Greah, Boon, Jameson, Jack, and Arizona Falcon, and Madelyn Koubek; brother, Art (Betty) Smidt of Omaha; sister, Sharon (Clyde) Hohlfeldt of Holstein; in laws, JoAnn Rosse of Lincoln, and Larry (Sue) Schledewitz of Maxwell; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Reka Smidt; in laws, John and Mildred Schledewitz; and daughter, Janet Schledewitz.

Donna Jean Schledewitz (1947-2024)

Eugene Marion “Geno” Vapenik, 76, of Cassville, Wisconsin, passed away on May 14, 2023.&nbsp;

Born on November 4, 1946 in Imperial, Nebraska, he was a devoted father, brother and friend, known for his compassionate spirit and dedication to his community.&nbsp;

Gene graduated from Madrid High School in 1964 and furthered his education at McCook College, graduating in 1966.

Shortly thereafter, he entered the United States Navy, where he served valiantly during the Vietnam War. After basic training, he attended Basic Hospital Corps School and Field Medical Service School. Gene was attached to a Marine unit, earning the title of “Devil Doc.” His service included commendable achievements and he was honorably discharged in November of 1970, decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Cross Gallantry, Vietnam Service Medal with Marine Corps device and one bronze star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V.”

Following his military service, Gene relocated to Wisconsin where he continued his career in the medical field. He obtained his PA license and dedicated many years to caring for others as a Physicians Assistant and later as a nurse, until his retirement.

Gene had a passion for the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. He was skilled in various crafts including gun tinkering, carving, engraving, and gardening. An avid collector and sharpener of knives, Gene also enjoyed sitting back, smoking his pipe and watching the birds, especially hummingbirds that visited his Wisconsin home.&nbsp;

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were his favorite dog breed and he had several. Horus was his last and best “Chessie,” and Gene later shared him with Tim and his family. He also kept a keen eye on governmental affairs, which he followed with great interest.&nbsp;

Gene is survived by his son Christopher of Los Angeles, California; his former wife and friend Eileen Vapenik of Los Angeles, California; his sister Maxine Stewart of Walla Walla, Washington; his brother Tim (Deb) of Wallace, Nebraska; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Dawn Marie-Elizabeth.&nbsp;

Military Services will be held on August 30 at 11 a.m. CT at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska. A luncheon will follow at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church at 3301 Echo Drive, North Platte.&nbsp;

Gene’s life and service will be honored in a manner benefitting his significant contributions to his country and community.&nbsp;

Sanjuana "Jane" Sanchez, 82, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at her home in Lexington.

She was born on March 14, 1942, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, to Elias Sanchez and Elvira Valenzuela.

Jane had a passion for sewing; a craft that allowed her to express her love and care for those around her. A dedicated scholar of her Bible, Jane's faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her through both trials and triumphs. Family also held a paramount place in her heart, and she often found joy in their company, nurturing relationships that spanned generations.

She is survived by her daughter, Julie Salas of Lexington, and her sons, John Trevino of Kearney and David Sanchez of Cozad. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Ricardo Sanchez, Veronica Sanchez, Jeremiah Salas, Keasha Martin, Damian Sifuentez, Rico Sifuentez, Tanya Sifuentez, and David Salamanca. Her brothers, Richard (Lucinda) Sanchez and Leo (Sally) Sanchez of Greeley, Colorado, along with her sisters, Susie Balderas and Marie Gonzalez, also of Greeley, Colorado. Jane also leaves behind numerous great-grandchildren who will carry forward her loving spirit.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Elias Sanchez and Elvira Valenzuela, and her brother, Joe Sanchez.

Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington, Nebraska with Elder Thomas McGregor, officiating. The service will be live-streamed via the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home Facebook Page.

Marvin “Marv” William Schildhauer of North Platte, NE, passed away at the age of 60 on Wednesday, August 22, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loved ones after an aggressive battle with cancer.

Marv was born on April 4, 1964 in Alliance, NE to Marvin and Patricia Schildhauer. &nbsp;He was raised in Whitman, NE on the original Rex Ranch with his sister Patricia “Trish”. &nbsp;Marv graduated high school from Hyannis High School in 1983.

Marv was so passionate about riding his Harley and fishing with his favorite people. &nbsp;He loved spending time with his grandchildren. &nbsp;It didn’t matter what he was doing, if someone needed help, he would drop whatever he was doing and be there to help.

Marv is survived by his wife Lesa; daughters, Kayce (James) Richardson, Shelby Schildhauer, Rebecca, Christina Ashley DeCent, and Daynlee Miller; mother, Patricia Schildhauer; sister, Trish (Kevin) Valentine; grandchildren, Noah, Dominick, Willow, Aiden, Cali, Jayce, Kyla, Jason, Silas, Ashlynn, Remy, Greyson; nieces, Echoo Valentine, Jess Shaw; special brothers, Nate Yancy, JT Thompson, Dennis Smith, Bruce Moe; numerous other family members and many friends.

Preceding him in death were his father, Marvin Schildhauer; mother-in-law, Yvonne Hiatt; uncles, Gerald and Wayne Schildhauer.

Cremation was chosen and a private family celebration will be held at a later date.

Marvin William Schildhauer (1964-2024)

Constance Luella “Connie Lu” (Engel) Homan of North Platte, passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at Elwood Care Center, in Elwood, NE surrounded by her family. She was born on November 15, 1926 at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin to Jess Leroy and Kathryn Evelyn (Harlin) Engel.

Some of her fondest memories of childhood included swimming and ice skating on Lake Monona, across the street from her childhood home. She graduated from Madison’s East High School in 1945 at the “top of the bottom third of her class”, which was one of her many “Momisms”. &nbsp;Connie attended the University of Wisconsin for two years, before continuing her education at Madison General School of Nursing, from which she graduated in 1950.

While attending the University of Wisconsin she met the love of her life, Marvin “Marv” Paul Homan on a blind date to a fraternity dance. They were married in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, aka “The Chicken Coop” in Monona, WI on November 11, 1950. After marriage, they moved to North Platte, where they built, owned and operated the Castle Motel with Marv’s family. &nbsp;Shortly thereafter, they started their family and were blessed with six children. “Children are such a comfort.” &nbsp;She was able to be a stay-at-home mom for more than 15 years. &nbsp;In 1967, she took a nursing refresher course and became a part time nurse at Memorial Hospital in North Platte. Connie later became a nursing instructor at Mid-Plains Community College, for 20 years. &nbsp;Connie attained her Bachelor of Science (1978) and Master of Science in Education (1986), both from Kearney State College.

Marv and Connie also owned and operated Old West Candies. They enjoyed golfing and snow skiing. &nbsp;In her later years she enjoyed painting ceramics, making her own stamped cards, embroidery, playing solitaire, pitch, and bridge. She thoroughly enjoyed her month-long trips to several southeastern states with her sisters. She was a member of the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, Altrusa, RSVP, and the Goodfellow Shoe Fund.

Connie was preceded in death by her husband, Marv; her parents; brothers, Jim (Mary) and Har (Gen); brother-in-law, Dick Neumann; son-in-law, Sandy Neal; daughter-in-law, Kate Talmage Homan.

She is survived by her daughters, Margaret “Peggy” Neal of Tryon, NE and Kathy (Gary) Stoddard of Cheyenne, WY; sons, Paul (Jeannie) of Lexington, NE, Tom (Patricia) of Rocky Mount, VA, Tim (Laurie) of Verona, WI, and John (Kimberly) of Mechanicsville, VA; sisters, Betty Jo (Ken) Kruska of Monona, WI, Mary Kathryn Neumann of Lodi, WI; 18 Grandchildren; 14 Great-Grandchildren and counting; and several nieces and nephews.

Constance "Connie" Luella Homan (1926-2024)

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother Colleen Renee Shafer Lembke, 68, on August 21, 2024 at UNMC in Omaha, Nebraska.

Colleen was born on July 26, 1956 in Grand Island to Kenneth and Jeannine Kamper Shafer. &nbsp;She grew up in North Platte and graduated from North Platte High School in 1974. &nbsp;Colleen met the love of her life David Lembke and they were united in marriage on June 21, 1975. &nbsp;To this union their children Jessica, Jeremiah, Jami and Emily were born. &nbsp;They made their home in North Platte and enjoyed the next 49 years together making beautiful memories.

Colleen was employed by the Lincoln County Attorney’s Office as a Child Support Enforcement Case Worker and was recently recognized for 35 years of service. &nbsp;She enjoyed her job and helping others. &nbsp;Colleen was a member of the Nebraska Child Support Enforcement Association holding the title of State President for two terms. &nbsp;She was also a member of the Foster Care Review Board for the past 20 plus years. &nbsp;

Colleen was very involved in her children and grandchildren’s lives. &nbsp;Throughout the years she was President of the PTA and enjoyed helping out as a Room Mother. &nbsp;She was a Blue Bird and Campfire Leader. &nbsp;She was a member of AYSO Soccer League and held the title of President. &nbsp;She coached several soccer teams and was always volunteering. &nbsp;She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and held several titles during the past 25 years.

Colleen spent her free time sewing, quilting and enjoying her grandkids various activities while cheering them on. &nbsp;She was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Nebraska Cornhusker fan. &nbsp;She loved taking trips with the family and making memories with all of us. &nbsp;She enjoyed visiting with friends and family whether it be over a good cup of coffee or a nice glass of wine. &nbsp;Her grandchildren always loved drinking “coffee klatch’ (German for coffee with gossip) with grandma on the back patio. &nbsp;She was definitely the driving force in her family and made sure we were all together for Christmas as that was her favorite holiday and she enjoyed decorating her house from top to bottom.

Colleen is preceded in death by her parents; in-laws James and Dorothy (Menke) Lembke; brother Steven Shafer; brother-in-law Robert Lembke.

Those left to cherish Colleen’s memory are her loving husband Dave; son Jeremiah (Kari) Lembke of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; daughters Jessica Pankonin and Jami (Eric) Stueben of Grand Island and Emily Lembke of North Platte; brother Ken Shafer of North Platte; sister Ellen Shafer (Neil Speer) of North Platte; grandchildren David Lembke, Gavin Stueben, Jaelyn (Kenneth) Narvaez, Dakota and Kalli Pankonin of Grand Island, Kiah Lembke of North Platte and Madalyn Pankonin of Chandler, Arizona; Ellis Lembke of Highlands Ranch, Colorado and various nieces and nephews.

Colleen was an amazing, beautiful soul and always there when needed offering support, wisdom, strength, courage and love. &nbsp;She cherished each and every one of her family members and friends especially her grandchildren. &nbsp;She had a heart of gold and left a lasting impact on everyone she touched. &nbsp;

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the family as they will be making a contribution to the Critical Care Team at UNMC in memory of Colleen.

She will be forever missed. &nbsp;Until we meet again, we “Love you bunches!”

Lawrence “Larry” Wayne Miller, passed away in Broken Bow, Nebraska on August 20, 2024, at the age of 72.&nbsp;

Larry was born on May 4, 1952, in Broken Bow, Larry dedicated his life to serving his community as a life-long resident. He worked as a foreman at the Broken Bow power plant for 42 years, where his innovative designs and contributions to the plant's hardware and software continue to ensure the smooth operation of electricity and water services for the town. Larry was also a devoted volunteer, serving 25 years as a firefighter and 15 years as an Emergency Medical Technician, always ready to lend a hand in times of need. Larry was deeply committed to fairness and justice, evident in his role as the local Union representative with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), where he tirelessly advocated for the rights of his fellow workers. A member of the Knights of Columbus and a former city council member, Larry won his council seat through a write-in campaign, a testament to the trust and respect he garnered from his community. Larry was very active in the Catholic Church, where his beautiful singing voice was well-known and loved by all.&nbsp;

Larry was very active in the Catholic Church, where his beautiful singing voice was well-known and loved by all.&nbsp;A loving husband of 46 years, he is survived by his beloved wife, Adele, and their five children: Melissa (Tim), Marcus (Tracy), Andrea (Rob), Kristen (Alex), and Joe (Matt). Larry’s legacy of service, faith, and dedication will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.&nbsp;
