&nbsp;North Platte,
Nebraska - Starting now and running through mid-April, approximately one
million Sandhill Cranes will spend about six weeks in the Platte River Valley
on their way north to Canada and Siberia. 400,000 of these Sandhill Cranes will
spend that time in the North Platte and Lincoln County area. While these
incredible creatures visit, they feed in the cornfields and wet meadows by day
in preparation for their long journey ahead, and roost in the shallow flowing
waters of the Platte River at night.

This migration event draws people from all over the globe,
and it can be experienced right here in North Platte. Dusty Trails offers
Sandhill Crane Tours daily from March 12th through April 1st. There are morning
and evening blind tours available that offer breathtaking views of the Sandhill
Cranes ascending from and descending to the wide and shallow riverbeds of the
North Platte River. There are also bus tours during the day which take you out
into the cornfields to watch the birds perform their unique dances and mating
rituals. 

This tour is set at their most active courting time and
allows plenty of time for photography. The tours are also very reasonably
priced, at $45 per person, making this a great affordable activity for the
whole family! There are also self-guided options for viewing the Sandhill
Cranes including three viewing blinds in the area that are open to the public,
as well as a recommended driving route to see the Sandhill Cranes in the corn
fields during the day.

According to an Economic Impact study done for Central
Nebraska in 2017, approximately 46,500 crane visitors came to Central Nebraska
during the migration that year. The average visitor’s length of stay was 2.7
days with an average spending per visitor, per day totaling up to $93.37.
Together, the overall economic impact of the Sandhill Crane Migration on
Central Nebraska was $14.30 million in 2017, supporting 182 year-round
equivalent jobs. Moreover, given economic activity is taxed by local government,
it is estimated that this economic impact generates $379,000 per year in local
property, sales, and lodging tax revenue.

The event co-hosted with TeamMates Mentoring Program is free and open to the community. Community Connections mentoring program offers year-round mentoring while TeamMates Program is academic school year. Mentors spend 4-8 hours a week with their mentees while doing activities. NORTH PLATTE - The North Platte city council held a special meeting on February 21st, and different agendas were discussed amongst the council. Topics discussed were repair work on the Willow Street via duct, annexations of property behind Starbucks and Sonic, Arpa funds for road paving and so much more.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NE – February 22, 2024 – Two big jackpots are up for grabs in the next Mega Millions® and Powerball® drawings. Because of these high jackpots, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to play responsibly.

A string of drawings without a jackpot winner has grown the estimated Mega Millions jackpot to its highest level since December 2023. There have been 21 consecutive drawings since December 12 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Friday, February 23 drawing to $525 million or $247.1 million with the cash option selected.

Powerball has also seen its jackpot grow over the last few months. There have been 22 drawings since January 3 without a jackpot winner. The estimated jackpot for the Saturday, February 24 drawing is $376 million or $177.5 million with the cash option selected.

The dual jackpot runs have produced some large Nebraska winners.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot on record occurred in August 2023 when one winner in Florida won a $1.602 billion jackpot. The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.040 billion jackpot.

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CST) Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, in Room 200 of the W.W. Wood Building on the North Platte Community College North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, Neb.

Board Chair Cynthia Duncan started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Duncan, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Jo Etta Brown, Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Ted Klug Jr., Kim Korgan, Ben Lashley, Ernie Mehl, Kent Miller and Tricia Schaffer. MPCC Board member Tyler Pribbeno was absent and excused.

a. Amy Taft spoke to the Board as a NPCC alum and member of the public regarding her thoughts on the recent termination of former NPCC head softball coach Janelle Higgins.

b. NPCC softball players Eden Shimaoka, April Grace, Hailey Ortiz, Nancy Martinez-Sanchez, and Amya Blake-Cosper spoke to the Board regarding their thoughts on the recent termination of former NPCC head softball coach Janelle Higgins.

c. MCC student trustee Graci Nelson updated the Board on student activities in McCook, and NPCC student trustee Reece Halley provided a recap of happenings in North Platte.

d. Board member Kent Miller told the Board about a Hershey High School student who already earned her associate degree from MPCC and has now been accepted into the Kearney Health Opportunities Program, a cooperative program between the University of Nebraska at Kearney and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

MPCC Board of Governors meeting wrap up report

Union Pacific plans to invest $3.4 billion in 2024 to support safe operations, renew assets and grow with customers. That’s the equivalent of spending more than $9 million every day to make the railroad safer and generate economic and supply chain activity across its 23-state footprint, boosting local, regional and the national economy.

An estimated 56% of the capital plan, or $1.9 billion will go toward upgrading and replacing infrastructure, such as rail, ties, and ballasts, along with $0.6 billion toward locomotives and equipment.

North Platte Community College’s music department will host its first concert of the spring semester March 7 with a focus on positive psychology.

The event is free and open to the public.&nbsp;It will&nbsp;begin at 7 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

The concert will feature performances by NPCC’s jazz band, the Jazzy Knights, and the college’s choir, the Knightly Singers.

NPCC concert will focus on “positive psychology”

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department

For Children’s Dental Health Month, Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages parents to teach good dental habits and get regular dental care for their children. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommend that children visit their dentist no later than their first birthday and every six months after that. When children learn how to care for their teeth early in life, their families save on costs and prevent future problems.

“According to AAPD, tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood illness in the United States, and the most preventable of all health problems,” states Sarah Minnick, Program Manager for SWNPHD. “Tooth decay is 5 times more common than asthma and 20 times more common than diabetes. In Nebraska, 46% of children aged 3 to 5 already have dental decay.”

Polish Your Pearls is a grant-based dental program from SWNPHD that helps supplement regular dental visits to provide protection against cavities for infants and children through 6th grade. This program is available to local daycares, preschools, and schools to provide oral health screening, dental education, sealants, and application of fluoride varnish.

The fluoride varnish that is applied by Polish Your Pearls is a sticky, honey like material that is painted on the teeth with a small soft brush. Since 2011, Paws-itive Partners Humane Society and veterinary clinics in North Platte and Sutherland have sponsored Love My Cat months. Two months each year, the goal of Love My Cat is to make spaying and neutering cats easily affordable for low-income cat owners in this area. “For only $35, low-income cat caregivers can provide lifelong care for their cat. Cats that are sterilized are less likely to get certain cancers, they do not contribute to the homelessness and overpopulation of cats, they tend to be more social and healthier" said Jo Mayber, Paws-itive Partners president.

Beginning now, cat owners can call 308-530-1516 to register for Love My Cat. Low-income cat owners must call this number before scheduling an appointment with their Love My Cat veterinarian in Sutherland or North Platte. Participants are encouraged to call as soon as possible so they don’t miss deadlines or delays. “Paws-itive Partners helps people of low-income status spay/neuter house pets, barn cats and stray cats they are caring for. We can help with up to three cats per household for $35 per cat.” Mayber said.&nbsp;

Love My Cat is an important Paws-itive Partners program and the organization’s largest expense annually. In addition to Love My Cat months, Paws-itive Partners helps spay/neuter dogs and cats year-round. They recently implemented Urgent Short-Term Pet Care for pets whose owners have been displaced due to hospitalization or homelessness.

Nebraska District Court Judge Travis P. O’Gorman from Alliance, Nebraska, was invited to sit with the Nebraska Supreme Court on February 8, 2024.

O’Gorman heard arguments in the case of S-21-0364,&nbsp;Nieveen v. Tax 106.&nbsp; In that case, Appellant argued that Nebraska’s tax certificate statutes were unconstitutional, and on appeal, the Nebraska Supreme Court determined that the statutes to be constitutional.&nbsp;&nbsp;See Nieveen v. TAX 106,&nbsp;311 Neb. 574, 974 N.W.2d 15 (2022).&nbsp; On further appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States, the Supreme Court of the United States vacated the Nebraska Supreme Court’s decision with directions that it reconsider the case in light of&nbsp;Tyler v. Hennepin County,&nbsp;598 U.S. 631 (2023).&nbsp;

O’Gorman sat in place of Justice Stephanie Stacy, who was recused from the case. The Court session was held in the Supreme Court Courtroom of the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln.

The Mid-Plains Community College Ogallala Campus will host its annual Youth Summer Sign-Up Day March 12.

The event provides a “one-stop shop” for parents looking for summer activities for their children. It saves families time and effort by bringing local youth organizations under one roof to provide details and answer questions about their upcoming events.&nbsp;

Booths will be set up from 3:30-6 p.m. in the Ogallala Auditorium, 514 E. B St. The event is free to attend and for participating organizations.

Information about the Try It Out Thursday summer youth program at the MPCC Ogallala Campus will also be available at that time.

The one-day classes will begin June 6 and continue through July 18. They include:

Youth Summer Sign-Up Day will be March 12 in Ogallala

A few spots still remain for the series of crafting classes that will be offered at the Mid-Plains Community College Broken Bow Campus this weekend.

Sunflower or Geometric Outdoor Barn Quilt

Activities will begin from 1-4 p.m. Friday with a free Sunflower or Geometric Outdoor Barn Quilt workshop. Participants will choose from the two options.

The design for the sunflower barn quilt will be drawn out ahead of time and ready for color marking and tape. Those who prefer the geometric option can select from 48 designs ranging from simple to complex.

Instructor Rose Mapel will explain how to dissect a pattern and transfer it to the barn quilt blank. Participants will need to take a hair dryer, a heavy-duty extension cord and yellow Delicate Surface FrogTape®, preferably 1.41-inch width, to the class.

The fun will continue from 4-9 p.m. Friday with a Crafter’s Retreat at the campus. The retreat will provide an opportunity for inspiration, socialization and time to enjoy an interruption-free weekend of working on personal sewing, scrapbooking or other artistic projects.

Projects can be locked up at the end of class and finished Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The fee is $10.

Also on Saturday, the campus will host a Creating Photo Memory Letters workshop from 9 a.m. to noon.

Participants will create a unique display using wooden letters and their favorite pictures. Attendees will be required to take their own photos and are asked to let the campus know ahead of time what letters they would like to use. The cost is $40.
